Specialized Muscle Therapy

Specialized Muscle TherapySpecialized Muscle Therapy

Why should I get PUSH Therapy?

PUSH Therapy allows us to:

  • Discover the source of your pain. It addresses Chronic Passive Tension (CPT), a major source of pain and imbalance.
  • Move beyond pain management. It aims for pain elimination.
  • Control your own recovery. It trains you to accelerate your healing whenever possible.
  • Keep your clothes on. You are treated while fully clothed, though we suggest wearing sports clothing.

What is PUSH Therapy?

PUSH Therapy is a proven and very different type of muscle therapy.

An acronym for Power Under Soft Hands, PUSH was developed to relieve the pain that comes from chronic passive tension that develops in soft tissues. This tension is often the most contributing source of ongoing pain and discomfort.

At the foundation of PUSH are the principles of human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and Tai Chi Ch'uan. We draw on these principles to treat clients with PUSH techniques.

These techniques release and lengthen rigid, contracted muscle tissue so it can return to a relaxed and supple resting state. That overall objective is to relieve pain, increase range of motion, improve muscle tone and restore correct postural alignment.

As a long-term treatment plan, PUSH Therapy is customized to meet unique individual needs. Clients are also trained to use easy and practical techniques that enable them to heal more quickly and maintain changes on their own.

PUSH Therapy represents evolution in the field of bodywork. It is a specialized muscle therapy designed specifically to relieve the pain that accompanies chronic muscle tension.

Chronic tension is a significant cause of ongoing pain, dysfunction, and discomfort in adults. Although widespread, it is often overlooked. PUSH Specialized Therapy provides a comprehensive program that can identify and eliminate this common problem.

Chronic Passive Tension

The concept of Chronic passive tension is central to understanding why PUSH Therapy is so effective.

When muscles need to act, as in moving an arm or leg, they contract and shorten. With repeated activity, they begin to fatigue. As this is occurring, a physiologic process is set in motion that results in a more limited blood supply to the tiring muscles. In conjunction with this process, a cycle can occur in which muscle fibers fail to lengthen completely when they return to a resting (passive) state. When this happens repeatedly, the fibers begin to remain somewhat contracted at all times. Blood supply is reduced and oxygen levels (which depend on blood supply) decline.

Chronic Passive Tension (CPT) describes the ongoing contraction that persists, even when muscles are in a state of rest. Chronically tense muscles often exert pressure on joints and other soft tissues, like nerves, causing pain.

CPT is a state that usually develops gradually, unnoticed until it results in discomfort and dysfunction. PUSH Therapy works by permanently changing muscle tissue so that it consistently returns to a relaxed and supple resting state. When this occurs, function is restored and lasting improvements in postural alignment, strength and performance are achieved.

Soft Pressure Stimulation

Soft Pressure Stimulation (SPS) describes the method used to change muscle tissue.

It reverses the pattern of fatigue, lactic acid buildup, constricted blood flow, and involuntary contraction that are involved in developing chronic passive tension.  Soft, direct pressure is applied along the length of muscle groups across their entire width. Once superficial layers of muscle tissue begin to respond and soften, deeper layers are stimulated. SPS is a uniquely efficient method of stimulating deep muscle layers without damaging tissue.  Application of the specialized techniques of SPS restore blood flow and nutrients. The process is repeated until no more layers of chronic passive tension exist. Using this method, the state of CPT is interrupted and can be eliminated. Muscles are restored to a supple, mobile, pain-free condition.

PUSH Treatment Plan

The PUSH Treatment Plan (PTP) is a multi-faceted approach that involves treatment, self-treatment an

Since every case is different, the plan is personalized to meet your individual needs.

Self-treatment helps accelerate healing by reinforcing the changes brought about during treatment sessions. It also helps prevent the development of new symptoms.

Mobility training, which involves easy movements based on your daily activities, creates long-term improvements in body mechanics, replacing dysfunctional patterns with sound ones.

The PTP provides a framework that both client and therapist can use to define goals. It saves time, allows for monitoring progress and eliminates the prospect of endless, symptom-chasing treatments.
